When I first got into Fly fishing and Fly tying, I did so on my own. I like you, started learning from Videos as well as limited books. I had encouraged my son, (who at the time was studying to be a designer), to tie my flies. Well as any busy college student will tall you "Dad, I've got things to do, The instructions are in the book." and so it started in earnest.

I needed flies. the trees were eating mine faster than i could tie them. So I sent out to tie my own. My first flies worked ok, but they weren't super great. I joined my local FFI club and there learned a lot about tying. I also really started to get into various books and going to shows to meet other tiers and learn. I also joined Trout unlimited and Later The FFI Fly Tying Group. I was able to learn from the FTG video library. I now have completed my FTG Bronze Skills award and am currently close to completing the silver skills awards flies.

yea I can tie absolutely lovely and complex flies. I remember what it was like to catch the first fish on a fly I tied.

So I came up with the attainable fly concept. simple versions of Great flies that will catch fish. These versions may be tied by someone who just practices a bit. as for looks Don't get wrapped up at first. Tie the flies and catch some fish. The passion flies will come later. If you get stuck book a private online session with me. And I'll help you directly.
